LEARNING FOR LIFE

Curriculum

The Curriculum at the Federation of  Liss Infant and Junior Schools

INTENT

We aim to help children develop a love of learning and to see themselves as ‘lifelong learners’.

It is our moral imperative to get curriculum design right and our curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced education that meets the needs of all children; ensuring that all develop cultural capital through appropriately sequenced subject matter content. We  develop our children’s intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual and physical knowledge, skills and attitudes. Building Learning Power is used to encourage resilience and to support the children in developing high expectations of themselves.

We support our children to be curious, resilient, independent, well-prepared for the next stage of their education and  ensure that they leave our schools equipped for life in modern Britain.

IMPLEMENTATION

The National Curriculum

All children in our school follow the National Curriculum programme of study, which offers a broad and balanced curriculum that:

  • promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the federation, and
  • prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

The National Curriculum is divided into four Key Stages plus the Foundation Stage.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The foundation Stage begins when children are 3 years old and includes the first year of primary education (YR) when children reach 5 years old. Children work towards the Early Learning Goals in the following areas:

3 Prime Areas

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

4 Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

A Foundation Stage Profile is completed throughout the reception year and shared with parents.  Early Years Curriculum at Liss.

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

Year 1 and 2.         Years 3 - 6.

The core subjects are: English, Mathematics and Science

The foundation subjects are: Art, Computing, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Music, PE and French (KS2).

Other subjects are: Religious Education and RSHE.

The curriculum is delivered in a variety of ways:

  • Whole class teaching
  • Group teaching
  • Individual teaching
  • Independent and self-directed activities

subjects are carefully planned so that content is appropriately sequenced, enabling our pupils to master the simpler elements before moving on to the more complex ones.

Lessons are planned to ensure a balance between the introduction of new ideas, knowledge and skills, and reinforcement, retrieval, practice and repetition of previous learning.

Home learning is used throughout the schools to support the children’s schoolwork and learning. A clear system has been established to help the children organise a set routine.

Visits and visitors are used to support and enrich the curriculum.

Subject Leaders play an important part in the success of our curriculum through a regular programme of monitoring, evaluation and review. All subject leaders receive training and the opportunity to continue developing their own  subject knowledge, skills and understanding so that they can support continued curriculum development and their colleagues across the Federation.
